Looking to escape to a winter wonderland this Christmas?

In this guide, we’ve taken a look at some of the best European cities that get consistent snow in December, making them the perfect place to spend a white Christmas. Make sure to grab a SIM Card from UK Prepaid SIM Card so you can share all the white snowy photos with your family and friends sweating away in an Australian summer.

Let’s get started

Helsinki, Finland

Finland’s capital is one of the snowiest cities in Europe during the winter months, and the temperatures are not for the faint of heart.

But if you brave the cold, you’ll be rewarded with sights of snow-capped cathedrals, and ships crashing through the frozen baltic sea along the harbour. You can even skate on it, or go ice fishing, if you’re so inclined.

Also, Helsinki really knocks it out of the park when it comes to winter food – rich meatballs and cuts of reindeer meat are the order of the day. And as an advanced modern capital, 5G coverage is excellent, if you want to keep in touch with friends back home, or use Google Maps seamlessly while walking around the capital.

Grenoble, France

If winter sports are more your thing, why not spend Christmas in the French alps?

Grenoble is a skiing and snowboarding hub, but it’s much busier in February compared to December, still making it a great choice for a white Christmas getaway.

And if you’re not one to hit the slopes, Grenoble still has plenty to do, including art galleries, museums, and stunning cable car trips to take.

In the city centre, 4G and 5G coverage is top-notch, but it can get a bit patchy once you head out into the mountains.

Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn is the snowiest city in Europe, averaging 20.5 days of snow per month. So if you want to almost guarantee a white Christmas, the Estonian capital is a great choice.

The medieval old town is a treat to explore, and the cost of accommodation is pretty reasonable compared to other European capitals. Just be careful not to slip as you walk down the hill from the old town when the weather is icy!

As you reach the foot of the hill and enter the new town, you’ll be met with a different side to Tallinn – a startup mecca, with plenty of good coffee shops, coworking spots, and 5G coverage to boot.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Although not quite as snowy as most of the other destinations on this list, Reykjavik is one of the only major cities where you can see the Northern Lights, making it an awesome place to stay in winter.

Iceland’s capital is also a key location in Viking history, and there are plenty of awesome museums to explore in the city. Nearby, there is stunning scenery to behold, including amazing waterfalls, and geothermal hot-spots.

Out and about in Reykjavik, you’ll typically get 4G speeds on your phone in most places, dropping down to 3G once you leave the city centre.

Innsbruck, Austria

Another winter sports retreat with a quieter, cosier feel is Innsbruck, in Austria.

With just 131,000 residents, Innsbruck is one of the smallest cities on this list. Although you’ll find this number increases in winter, many visitors opt to stay in the ski resorts around the town, rather than in the city centre itself.

There are so many different slopes to explore around Innsbruck, making it the perfect destination for skiers and snowboarders. Plus, you get the added benefit of easy access to Austrian beer, and plenty of Wiener schnitzel. Just note that 5G coverage is a little bit limited, except on main roads in downtown Innsbruck.
