Everyone is different, and that makes the world a great place! But seriously, everyone’s cell phone data usage is different. Some people love binging on YouTube or Snapchat, or uploading photos to Instagram or Facebook. Some people might use just 1GB or 2GB of data each month, but many people easily go through 5GB-10GB (or more) every month!
When you’re travelling you won’t be connecting to your home Wi-Fi anymore, and that means the data usage on your cell phone will increase. You’ll always be using cellular 4G LTE data.
Here’s some useful information about estimating your data usage on your cell phone if you’re planning a vacation to the UK or Europe:
- Work out how much data you normally use each month and double it (remember you won’t be at home connected to your Wi-Fi, and you’ll be using your cell phone a lot more to share your vacation experiences with family, loved ones and friends back home)
- A 5 minute Whatsapp voice call will use about 5MB of data.
- Sending 10 photos to someone on Whatsapp will use about 50MB of data.
- A 5 minute Skype video call will use about 15MB of data.
- A 5 minute FaceTime video call will use about 15MB of data.
- Using Google Maps for 10 minutes will use about 6MB of data.
- Uploading 10 photos to Facebook or Instagram will use about 50MB-100MB of data.
- Using your phone as a hotspot to connect to your laptop or other device will use a lot of data.
Adding all this usage up means you could easily use several hundred megabytes of data each day.
If you want lots of data, make sure to get a prepaid UK & Europe SIM Card from My UK SIM Card before you leave on your vacation. It comes with a generous 12GB of high speed 4G LTE data, minutes and texts.
